The client
Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the center of the US construction landscape, MobiClocks revolutionized the time tracking and attendance process for a wide range of construction and field operations. MobiClocks founders have decades of construction experience and deeply understand the challenges that construction companies face in their day-to-day operations. Moreover, the project started as an internal tool for one of the largest Florida-based construction companies and quickly became a separate SAAS solution.
Business challenge
Buddy punching is a significant challenge faced by construction companies with large labor forces. On average, labor costs almost half the entire construction project, and having ghost employees on the field adds to project costs. Before creating their solution, they tried all existing solutions available on the market, from RFID cards to custom-mounted cameras on the field. After spending two years testing all available solutions, they have decided to create their own solution, specializing in construction industry needs.
At MobiClocks, we were determined to revolutionize time tracking in the construction industry. However, as a non-tech company, we lacked the expertise to bring our vision to life. That's where InConcept Labs came in.

How did it start?
After realizing that existing solutions don't solve their problems, Mobiclocks has evaluated different development companies for creating their solution. Being a completely non-tech company, they have looked for a software agency to take care of their project from the start and provide a CTO as a service. From the first call, it was apparent that there is a great synergy between InConceptLabs and MobiClocks. An initial 4-month-long pilot project became the beginning of a 7+ year collaboration, which continues to this day.
The solution
The full solution was built in two major phases. The first phase involved developing a proof of concept for the customer’s internal use and real field testing. The key requirement was to implement a face recognition-based Clock In/Out solution and prove its value on the field. InConceptLabs’ team did thorough research on all existing face recognition solutions on the market, compared the results, and selected AWS as the main solution. Then, in less than 12 months, InConceptLabs has released a fully functional time and attendance system with the following features:
Mobile applications that support online and offline modes for both iOS and Android platforms
Improved face recognition solution using self-developed smart algorithms on top of AWS solutions, which allows for handling edge cases for similar employees
Flags dashboard, which allows taking control of all unexpected events on the fields and easy access to fix everything manually
Complete cost-coding functionality
Reporting module with role-based reports for every job in the construction
The field testing results exceeded all expectations, and very soon, it was obvious that MobiClocks could be a game changer in the construction industry.
After the very successful testing on the field, we have undoubtedly built something more than just an internal tool. It was decided to build a new product specifically to serve the needs of the construction industry. Now, the engineering team's goal was to build a multi-tenant scalable solution that could serve hundreds of thousands of construction employees.
InConcept Labs, an Amazon Web Services Partner, designed the entire application to be hosted on AWS cloud and utilize all of the power of AWS cloud services.
For multi-tenancy support, the following technologies and approaches were selected:
Java Spring Boot as a main backend technology
PostgreSQL for DataBase
AWS S3 was selected as a file system for storing terabytes of punch photos using different tiers
Schema-level data isolation was put in the base of multi-tenancy architecture, which allowed having a single database and at the same time, keeping different customers’ data completely isolated from each other.
For scalability, performance, and cost-efficiency where possible multiple lambda functions were utilized to use full capability of the serverless architecture concept.
